Adalbert Geheeb

Adalbert Geheeb ( born March 21, 1842 in Geysa; † September 13, 1909 in Königsfelden / Switzerland ) was a German botanist and moss researchers. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Go. ".

Life and work

The son of a pharmacist also studied pharmacy and took over at a young age his father's pharmacy. In his spare time he worked on nature and landscape of the Rhön, especially with the botany and especially with mosses. Geheeb was recognized as moss researchers internationally and corresponded with leading botanists of Europe. His botanical knowledge summarized in the " Botanical Notes " in the " Rhön leader."

In 1909 he wrote to Ernst Haeckel: " My European Moosherbar includes 1,300 species, present in more than 50,000 different forms." Gheeb published over 80 scientific papers and has his books with many excellent illustrations provided, which today are invaluable for Bryology.

The Royal Botanical Society of London awarded him because of his outstanding achievements honorary doctorate and appointed him as a corresponding member. Geheeb scientific estate is located in Haeckel House in Jena.

Geheeb co-founded the club in 1876 in Rhön Gersfeld and led for many years the local association Geysa.

The moss genus " Geheebia " has been named after him as well as the moss Brachythecium geheebii.

His son Paul Geheeb was a renowned educational reformer.
