Adalbert of Saxony

Adalbert of Saxony ( born May 8, 1467 Meissen, † May 1, 1484 in Aschaffenburg ) was Adalbert III. Administrator of the Archbishopric of Mainz.

Adalbert was the son of Ernest of Saxony. In order to ensure the protection of the Thuringian areas of the Mainz archdiocese to Erfurt and the calibration field and to ally themselves with Ernst of Saxony, made archbishop of Mainz, Diether von Isenburg and the chapter of Mainz the still underage Adalbert in 1477 on the provisor the city of Erfurt and the bailiff the Rusteberg at Rustenfelde in the calibration field and 1479 as a member of the Mainz cathedral chapter. Already in 1480 chose the chapter of Mainz Adalbert coadjutor with the right of succession to the episcopal throne. The election was in 1481, despite grave concerns confirmed by Pope Sixtus IV. After the death of diether Adalbert followed him into office on May 8, 1482. Adalbert had not yet reached the age for a bishop's consecration and initially remained administrator; because Adalbert already died in 1484 before his episcopal ordination, he was not formally Archbishop of Mainz. Accordingly, he is depicted on his tomb in the Mainz Cathedral without a miter and pallium.

Adalbert gained from Erfurt in 1483 the recognition of Erbherrlichkeit of the Bishopric of the city. In Adalbert's reign was in Mainz Martinsburg, the archbishop's castle, completed.
