Adama ( Oromo: Adaama, Ge'ez አዳማ ) or Nazret ( ናዝሬት ) is a town in central Ethiopia. It is the capital of the administrative region of Oromia and of their Misraq Shewa Zone (West Shewa ). According to 2005 census, it had 228,623 inhabitants.

Adama is located at an altitude of 1712 meters at the transition between the highlands of Abyssinia and the lowlands in the East African grave break, so meet here Oromo and Afar herders and Oromo farmers. The site in its current form owes its existence to the construction of the railway line from Addis Ababa to Djibouti in 1917. Among Haile Selassie the original Oromo village name was replaced by that of the biblical Nazareth.

In 1994, of 127 842 inhabitants 44.42 % Amhara, Oromo 26.23 %, 7.54% Silt'e, 7.29% Sebat Bet Gurage -, Tigray 6.27% and 3.63% Soddo - Gurage. 71.18 % spoke Amharic as their mother language, 13.96% Oromo, 4.31% Silt'e, Gurage 3.92%, 3.7% and 1.33 % Tigrinya Soddo.

Besides the rail connections to Addis Ababa and Djibouti City Adama has road links to the lakes in the grave breakdown region and after Assela and Assab. Its convenient location, it could grow rapidly, from 39,000 inhabitants in 1970 to currently about 300,000 inhabitants.

History

Nazret initially remained a small town. Its growth began around 1954, when the river Awash sugar plantations with their own refineries were created. 1960 three power stations were put into operation on Awash. Adama became a center for the processing of agricultural and livestock products from the environment. During the famine in Ethiopia 1984-1985, the EC set up large warehouses for the storage of cereal aid shipments.

2000 Adama was used instead of new capital of Addis Ababa, Oromia and regained its former name. This step caused controversy, as the Oromo consider Addis Ababa ( Finfinnee ) as their capital. Besides Adama also Nekemte, Ambo, Mojo, Zway, Asella and Jimma were considered as regional capital. The choice of Adama was based on topography, climate, infrastructure, and economy of the city.
