Adel Karasholi

Adel Karasholi (* October 15, 1936 in Damascus ) is a Syrian, Arabic and German-speaking writer.

Life

Adel Karasholi comes from a Kurdish family. He has published poems in his youth and founded in 1953 in Damascus, a journal of art and literature, which was banned by the Syrian government. He worked in a printing company and as a newspaper and radio editor. From 1957 was the youngest member of his inclusion in the Arab Writers' Union. After this had been banned in 1959, Karasholi emigrated to Germany. He stayed in various places in East and West Germany. He finally settled down in 1961 in Leipzig. He studied at the Literary Institute " Johannes R. Becher " ( Literature ) and at the Higher School of Theatre ( Theatre Studies ), where he received his doctorate in 1970 with a thesis on the theater of Bertolt Brecht. From 1968 to 1993 he was a lecturer at the University of Leipzig. From 2004 to 2005 he took over the Chamisso poetics lecturer at the TU Dresden. He is married and now lives as a freelance writer in Leipzig.

Adel Karasholi is the author of poetry and essays; he wrote in Arabic, and since the mid-sixties in German language. He also translated narrative prose, poetry and drama from both languages ​​. His works are trying to build a bridge between literature and poetry of the Occident and the Orient. He is intensively with a problem of our time apart: what and where is home.

Adel Karasholi was a member of the Writers Union of the GDR since 1980. Since 1990 he is a member of the Association of German writer and since 1992 the PEN center of Germany.
