Adelaide of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg

Adelheid Princess of Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg ( born April 3, 1831 in Klein Heubach, † December 16, 1909 in Ryde, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom ) was a daughter of the Hereditary Prince Konstantin zu Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg and Princess Marie Agnes of Hohenlohe- Langenburg.

Life

Adelaide of Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg married in 1851 at Schloss Löwenstein King Michael I of Portugal, son of John VI. de Bragança, King of Portugal and Brazil, and his wife Johanna Charlotte of Spain. Since Michael had already lost at the time of marriage to the Portuguese throne ( cf. Miguelistenkrieg ) and lived in exile, Adelheid never ascended to the Portuguese throne. For the Portuguese legitimists (ie, the follower of Michael I. ) but she was the rightful queen of the country.

As a widow, was Princess Adelheid Benedictine nun in the convent of St. Cäcile, on the English Isle of Wight. In her death in 1909 there was her granddaughter, the future Empress Zita of Austria, to obtain from the grandmother put the finishing touches of education. Special emphasis was placed on Latin, philosophy, history and music. This educational activity was the last of Princess Adelheid, who led at the time as prioress of the convent. Shortly before her death, Princess Zita traveled up from there.

Princess Adelheid died in December 1909; her and her husband's corpse was transferred to 1967 to Lisbon, where they were buried in the São Vicente de Fora monastery. She is the great-grandmother of today (2013 ) the Portuguese pretender to the throne and head of the House of Braganza, Duarte Pio of Braganza, and the great- great-grandmother of the Austrian pretender to the throne and head of the Imperial House of Habsburg - Lorraine, Karl Habsburg-Lothringen.

Her brother was Prince Charles VI. zu Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg (1834-1921), the Dominican Father was a widower.
