Adil Çarçani

Adil Carcani ( born May 15, 1922 in Fushëbardha, district of Gjirokastra, † October 13, 1997 in Tirana) was of Albanian Prime Minister in the final stages of the Hoxha regime.

Life

Carcani was born in the village Fushë - Bardhë around Gjirokastra and closed during the Second World War, the partisans. As a member of the Communist Party, he was in the 1950 Minister of Mines. Later he became a member of the Politburo and Deputy Prime Minister (1981). On 18 December 1981 he assumed the post of prime minister after the alleged suicide of Prime Minister Mehmet Shehu. Unlike its predecessor, Carcani added the fact that the policies were largely determined by the party leader Enver Hoxha and his successor Ramiz Alia.

After the mass popular protests that led to the democratic transformation of the country, he resigned as prime minister in February 1991. In the new Parliament, in which he had been elected in the same year, he gave the opening speech. A year later he retired from political life of the country. In 1994, he was sentenced to prison for embezzlement and abuse of power. For health reasons, the sentence was commuted to house arrest. He died under house arrest in Tirana.
