Adolf Appellöf

Jakob Johan Adolf Appellof ( born November 2, 1857 Church Game Guard on Gotland; † January 5, 1921 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish zoologist who was best known for his research on marine molluscs, specifically to embryonic squid and sea anemones.

Appellof was the son of a priest. In 1877 he obtained his High School after which he began to study at the University of Uppsala, which he earned his doctorate in 1886 in Visby. A year later he was hired at the same institution as a lecturer.

In 1890 he was appointed curator of the museum in Bergen, Norway, in 1907 where he was head of the zoological department. 1910 moved back to Sweden Appellof after he was appointed in his original alma mater as professor of anatomy. A generous donation of Consul Robert Bünsow enabled him to establish a biological station on the Swedish west coast at the village Fiskebäckskil. With this station, the transformation of marine biology at Uppsala University began as a scientific discipline.

In his research is focused on Appellof the embryonic development of invertebrates. He discovered regularities in the life cycle of the lobster, which were for the management of the fishing industry is important.
