Adolfo Nicolás

Adolfo Nicolás Pachón SJ ( born April 29, 1936 in Villamuriel de Cerrato, Palencia, Spain) is a Roman Catholic theologian and since 2008 the 30th Superior General of the Society of Jesus.

Life

Adolfo Nicolás entered 1953 into the novitiate of the province of Toledo and studied philosophy and theology. Since 1964 he has lived in Japan and received on March 17, 1967 in Tokyo, the ordination. He then completed a postgraduate course at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In 1971 he was appointed as professor of systematic theology at Sophia University in Kioi -chō, Chiyoda- ku, Tokyo -to. From 1978 to 1984 he was director of the Pastoral Institute in Manila, Philippines, then he worked in Korea. Since 2004 he was moderator of the Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceania ( " Jesuit Conference of East Asia and Oceania ").

At the 35th General Congregation in Rome, he was adopted by a majority of the 217 delegates after twelve days of secret deliberations on January 19, 2008, elected to the top of the " Society of Jesus ", the world's largest with 19,200 members Catholic male order. It shall be the successor of Peter Hans Kolvenbach, who was in office since 1983. Pope Benedict XVI. agreed to the election of Nicolás.
