Adonias Filho

Adonijah Filho, actually Adonijah Aguiar Jr. ( born November 27, 1915 in Itajuípe, Bahia; † August 2, 1990 in Ilheus, Bahia) was a Brazilian writer.

Life

Adonijah Filho came from a long-established cocoa planter family; his parents were Adonijah Aguiar and Rachel Bastos de Aguiar. 1922 began his schooling at the primary school of Ilheus and six years later he moved to the boarding school run by Jesuits in Salvador ( one of his former classmates was the future writer Jorge Amado ).

After successful graduation Adonijah Filho went to Rio de Janeiro, and settled there as a journalist; he wrote, inter alia, for magazines and newspapers such as " Revista do Brasil ", " Correio da Manhã " and "A Manhã ". In the latter, he was responsible for many years as the feuilleton and published there under the pseudonym Djalma Viana. In 1944, he wanted to own publishing - become self-employed, but failed after a short time and therefore took until 1950 the line of the publisher A Noite - Ocidente.

In 1950, he moved into politics and presented himself as a representative of the state of Bahia for the Parliament; but was not elected. During this time Adonijah Filho could debut successfully as an author; His first novel, "Os servos de Morte " was published in 1946. In 1954 he was entrusted with the management of Serviço Nacional de Teatro and also with the Instituto Nacional do Livro.

When Adonijah Filho was appointed in 1961 to head the National Library of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, he was already a well-known writer. He held until 1971 this office.

At the age of almost 75 years Adonijah Filho died on 2 August 1990 in Ilheus and found his final resting place.

Honors

Reception
