Adriaan van Royen

Adriaan (or Adrianus ) van Royen (* November 11, 1704 in Leiden, † February 28, 1779 in Leiden ) was a Dutch physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Royen ".

Life and work

Adriaan van Royen is the son of Jan van Royen and Cornelia van Groenendijk. He married Johanna Adriana Wesselius, the daughter of Professor John Wessel and his wife Adriana van Ruytenburg. After studying medical sciences at Leiden University, he received his doctorate in 1728 with the work Dissertatio medica - Botanical Garden of anatome and oeconomia plantarum as a doctor of medicine there. Since June 27, 1728, he is Kaspar Scheuchzer Member of the Royal Society because of a proposal by Hans Sloane, Francis Clifton and John. After completing his doctorate, he established himself as a doctor in 1729 and suffering professor of botany in Leiden.

1732 him the professorship of medicine and botany at the University of Leiden is transmitted. From Herman Boerhaave he takes over in 1730 the management of the botanical garden, which he carries to 1754. The transformation of the garden takes place together with Carl Linnaeus. 1754 he is released from his teaching duties of Botany and Professor Emeritus in 1775. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was in the years 1742/43, 1758 /59 and 1770/71 Rector of the Alma Mater. Royen also appeared as a poet in appearance.

Ehrentaxon

Carl Linnaeus named in his honor, the genus of the plant family Royena the ebony family ( Ebenaceae ). The genus is now a synonym of Diospyros.
