Adrian Ludwig Richter

Adrian Ludwig Richter ( born September 28, 1803 in Dresden, † June 19, 1884 ) was an important painter and draftsman of German Romanticism and Biedermeier.

Life

Adrian Ludwig Richter was born on 28 September 1803 in Dresden- Friedrichstadt, the son of the draftsman and engraver Carl August Richter.

After Ludwig Richter had finished his regular school in 1815, he began as an apprentice to his father. Model of his engravings that time was especially Daniel Chodowiecke. To live out his artistic vocation, he studied additionally with a scholarship at the Art Academy in Dresden. From 1820 to 1821 he acted as signatories to the Russian prince Narischkin on a trip to the South of France and Paris. He made there on drawings and paintings, which later went as a gift to the Empress of Russia Louise of Baden. From 1821 to 1823, Richter gave up in Dresden and then went from 1823 to 1826 to Italy to Rome. There he made ​​friends with German artists such as Joseph Anton Koch, Carl Gottlieb Peschel and Julius Schnorr von Carol Field. Here also his understanding coined to landscape painting of idealistic ideas about human-nature harmony. The outcome was important pictures like " The watzmann " or " Valley at Amalfi ". His circle of friends later included the Dresden painter and architect Hermann Woldemar.

After returning to Germany he taught from 1828 to 1835 at the State Drawing School in Meissen, where proposals included Gottfried Pulian to his pupils. In 1826 he has also been appointed to succeed his father as a teacher at the Dresden Academy of Arts for the landscape class. For the series " The picturesque and romantic Germany " by the Leipzig publisher Georg Wigand he made the boards for the volumes of resin, he wandered starting in late summer 1836 in Ballenstedt, Franks and Giant Mountains. He used for his work near the Elbe and its beauty, especially the eyes, arising from the ship, and so, in 1837, among others, the image of " Go at the frightening stone ". Now he also began with woodcut illustrations for books, which should make it known. At this time he was also appointed professor of landscape painting in Dresden. Its climax in the illustrative painting he had in 1842.

Judge illustrated fairy tales, including the famous edition of the popular tales of the Germans from 1842 by Johann Karl August Musaeus, is considered one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century. In addition, he worked on collections of songs and wallet works ( Child Life, 1852). Other important publications of his woodcuts were, among others, edifying and Contemplative, New bouquet for the house, Goethe and Schiller's Bell album. In total, he illustrated more than 150 books.

After the painting " Bridal procession in Spring" from 1847 was his last oil painting "In June " 1859. His artistic achievements were a golden medal at the Paris World Exposition in 1855 for the image " Bridal procession in Spring" rewarded. In 1869 he began to write his life. Judges had to stop in 1873 due to an acute eye trouble with the drawing and painting. He therefore also resigned in 1876 from the Academy of Arts in Dresden. Two years later, he also left the Academic Council. As Ludwig Richter died on 19 June 1884 he was honored with a magnificent state funeral on the New Catholic Cemetery in Dresden- Friedrichstadt.
