Adrianus Turnebus

Adrianus Turnebus, French: Adrien (de) Turnèbe (* 1512 in Les Andelys, Normandy, † June 12, 1565 in Paris) was a French humanist and philosopher. Turnebus was one of the leading French scholars in the mid-16th century.

Turnebus studied at the age of twelve years philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris. Later he was appointed as Professor of Belles-Lettres at the University of Toulouse. From 1547 until his death he held the chair of Greek at the Collège de France. Turnebus published excellent editions of Aeschylus ( 1552), Sophocles and other ancient authors. He was also known for the bold changes that he made in large parts of the ancient texts. His son Odet de Turnèbe (1552-1581) was the author of " Les Contents", an amusing comedy with a moralizing undertone.
