Æthelbald of Wessex

Aethelbald ( Aethelbald, Ethelbald ) (c. 834; † December 20 860) was the second son of the Anglo-Saxon king of Wessex Æthelwulf and his first wife Osburga.

When his older brother Æthelstan died in 851, was Aethelbald legacy of his father, whom he forced to abdicate 855. His coronation took place in Kingston upon Thames.

After his father's death on 13 January 858 he married in the same year his widow, his stepmother Judith (* probably 844; † after 870), the daughter of the Emperor Charles the Bald ( Carolingian ), who returned to Æthelbalds death in the Frankish Empire. In the 13th century a source is specified, Aethelbald would violate Judith from repentance.

He already died 860 and was buried at Sherborne in Dorset. Since his marriage was childless and was succeeded by his brother Aethelberht († 865), who was already king of Kent, Sussex and Surrey.
