Æthelred II of Northumbria

Æthelred II (also Athelred, Edilred ) was the mid-9th century king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria.

Life

Æthelred was the son of the king Eanred ( 808/810-840/841 or 830-854 ) of Northumbria. His mother is unknown. Maybe he was a descendant of Eadwulf ( 705-706 ) from the Northumbrian royal house.

The embossed by Æthelred stycas ( silver coins with very low fines content) were of such poor quality material that you can refer to them as brass currency. About 760 pieces of this stycas remained. The wide distribution of these coins even beyond the borders of Northumbria out to Mercia, East Anglia and Kent, refers to monitoring and control of the economy by the king.

After Æthelred was killed at 848/849 or 862 under unknown circumstances Osberht followed him on the throne.
