Æthelweard, king of the Hwicce

Æthelweard (also Ædiluueardus, Ediluuard ) was an Anglo-Saxon king of Hwicce in the early 8th century.

Life

Æthelweard was the son and successor of King Oshere. The brothers Æthelheard and Æthelweard followed before 706 as subregulus ( Under King ) jointly to the throne. Some historians believe that the brothers Æthelheard, Æthelweard, Æthelric and Aethelberht ruled jointly.

The few known facts of his life arise from documents, which he exhibited or signed as a witness: 692 signed Æðilheard, Æðilweard, Æðelberht and Æðelric a land grant Æthelred of Mercia to the monk Oslaf. In the year 693, the four brothers testified that Oshere " for the salvation of his soul " Cuthswith, the abbess of Penintanham (probably Inkberrow, Worcs. ), Land left. Between 704 and 709 sold Ædilheardus and Ædiluueardus without citing its title country.

In the year 706 he needs to give away to Lander land to Bishop Ecgwine as subregulus the consent of the King Cenred of Mercia. The last known witness Æthelweards is a document of King Aethelbald of Mercia in the year 716/717, which he signed as' Æþeluuard dux ". Æthelweards death date is unknown.
