Afaf Meleis

Afaf Ibrahim Meleis ( born March 19, 1942) is an Egyptian- American nurse researcher, medical sociologist and professor of nursing.

Highlights of her professional interest are women's health, the health care of immigrants, the international health care and the theoretical development of nursing science.

Life and work

Meleis graduated in 1961 her degree in nursing from the University of Alexandria, summa cum laude and left Egypt to continue her education at the University of California, Los Angeles. She graduated there in 1964 to study nursing with the MS from 1966 was followed by M. A. in sociology. In 1968, she received a doctorate in the field of medical and social psychology. On February 25, 1975, she became an American citizen.

After receiving her doctorate, she taught at the University of California at Los Angeles and San Francisco, was a professor in both the Department of Public Health as well as nursing. Meleis 2002 was appointed as a professor of nursing and sociology, as well as dean of the nursing faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. There she also heads the WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership. She is the Vice President of the International Council on Women's Health Issues. As a guest professor she lectured in Southeast Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

Employees and Memberships

Meleis is a member of the Royal College of Nursing in the UK, the American Academy of Nurses and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Institute of Medicine, of the Forum of Executive Women and the Pennsylvania Women's Forum. She is also a trustee of the National Health Museum and a board member of CARE, the Global Health Council and the Life Science Career Alliance. 2008 she was a board member of the Nurses Education Fund. Meleis is an international ambassador of Girl Child initiative of the International Council of Nurses.

Publications

Meleis has published more than 200 articles in sociology, nursing science and medical journals and a number of other monographs and other publications. Your 1985 published book "Theoretical Nursing: Development and Progress" ( German: nursing theory: the subject, the development and prospects of theoretical thinking in nursing ) is regarded as a standard work of nursing science and research, and has appeared in 4 Aufklage 2006. More of her published writings are, for example, " Women's Work, Health, and Quality of Life. " (2001) and "Caring for Women Cross - Culturally " (2002).
