Afonso of Portugal, Cardinal

Afonso de Portugal ( * April 23, 1509 in Évora, † April 16, 1540 in Lisbon ) was Infante ( Prince ) of Portugal and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

The fourth son of King Manuel I of Portugal had studied literature, Latin and Greek language. Even where early Apostolic Proto notaries, he was appointed on September 9, 1516 as Bishop of Idana, Pope Leo X made ​​him Cardinal on 1 July 1517 and put him on February 23, 1519 to the See of Viseu.
