Afonso of Portugal, Cardinal

Afonso de Portugal ( * April 23, 1509 in Évora, † April 16, 1540 in Lisbon ) was Infante ( Prince ) of Portugal and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

The fourth son of King Manuel I of Portugal had studied literature, Latin and Greek language. Even where early Apostolic Proto notaries, he was appointed on September 9, 1516 as Bishop of Idana, Pope Leo X made ​​him Cardinal on 1 July 1517 and put him on February 23, 1519 to the See of Viseu. On February 20, 1523, he was appointed Archbishop of Lisbon and to the bishop of Évora. As a cardinal deacon, he received on 6 July 1525, when the titular church of S. Lucia in Septisolio and got as archbishop of Lisbon on July 16, 1535 the pallium, after he had received episcopal ordination. On August 13, 1535, he moved to the titular church of Ss. Giovanni e Paolo.
