Agnes Dunbar (mistress)

Lady Agnes Dunbar (* 1340, † after 1390 ) was a Scottish noblewoman and mistress of King David II of Scotland.

Biography

Agnes was the only daughter of Patrick Dunbar, 9th Earl of March ( 1285-1369 ), claimant to the Scottish throne, and his wife Lady Agnes Randolph, 4th Countess of Moray ( 1312-1369 ), known as Black Agnes. Her mother defended in 1339 for several weeks, the Castle Dunbar successfully against the English.

Lady Agnes was maid of honor at Queen Johanna (1321-1362) and was in 1369 the mistress of the king of Scotland David II ( 1324-1371 ). Shortly before his death he had intended, since his second marriage with Lady Margaret Drummond also remained childless to marry Lady Agnes. She married in 1372 Sir James Douglas ( 1330-1420 ), 1st Lord of Dalkeith. From the marriage seven children were born.
