Agnes of Austria (1154–1182)

Agnes of Austria (* 1151, † 13 January 1182 ) from the house of Babenberg was Queen of Hungary and Duchess of Carinthia.

Life

She was the daughter of Duke Henry II of Austria and Bavaria Jasomirgott (* 1107, † 1177 ) and his first wife Gertrude of Saxony, the only daughter of Emperor Lothair III, born..

In her first marriage she was in 1166 at the age of 15 years with four years older Hungarian King Stephen III. married. The marriage was mediated by Stephen Euphrosina mother, a Kievan princess who had good contacts with the German principalities.

The couple had no children, however, and Stephan died after six years of marriage at the age of 25 years.

Agnes married in the following year ( 1173 ) the Carinthian Duke Hermann II († 1181 ). The marriage lasted only briefly also because Duke Hermann died eight years later. Duchess Agnes died a year after him, she was only 31 years old. The marriage sprang two sons, the Dukes of Carinthia were successively. Ulrich III. , The son and successor of the younger son Bernhard, died childless, so Carinthia first fell in Bohemia and later in Austria.

Duchess Agnes was buried in the crypt of the Vienna Scots Church at her father and his second wife of the page.
