Agrarianism

A political party organized as a representation of the peasant movement is called the Peasant Party. Depending on the regional tradition and political cleavages tend peasant parties more to social reform to national socialist or populist demands. In the 1920s, peasant parties were in Europe, both catalysts of political integration of the rural population as well as autocratic changes in individual countries ( eg Estonia ).

Background

The parties of the so-called "Green International " ( Werner Conze ) rooted in agrarian (semi-) feudal societies. They stood not only for rural day or particular interests, but their objective landreformerische barg socially revolutionary potential. In their rhetoric, they were often, some even today, anti-modern, anti- urban, anti-Semitic and anti-intellectual to. Peasant parties affected insofar as the culture of the respective companies often in the sense of petty-bourgeois ideas and resentment.

Immediately after the Second World War arose in the countries occupied by the Soviet Union States, the peasant parties partly to large mass movements ( see, for example, the Hungarian FKGP ). This can be considered as a response of the population to the impending establishment of a socialist regime in the territories occupied by the Soviet Union states: The population at large joined now quite the social demands of the rural population, but moved clear stand against the communist parties.

After the collapse of the people's republics in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe peasant parties tried again past successes to tie. But new old parties could not do that in general, or only in exceptional cases. While in individual states movements and parties with populist rhetoric able to build on parts of the old cleavage structures in a problematic way, other groups of peasant political spectrum approached the Christian Democratic parties. A special feature is the development in Latvia: Latvian Here the " Farmers Union " LZS and the Green Party LZP were a civil - environmental alliance (under the name OCD), and were very successful in elections.
