Agustín García-Gasco Vicente

Cardinal Agustín García- Gasco y Vicente ( born February 12, 1931 in Corral de Almaguer, Toledo, Spain; † 1 May 2011 Rome) was archbishop of Valencia.

Life

Agustín García- Gasco Vicente attended the Seminary of Madrid -Alcalá. In Madrid he received on 25 May 1956, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Then García- Gasco Vicente went for further studies at the Pontifical University of Comillas and earned a licentiate in 1969 in Catholic theology, and in 1970 a degree in sociology of work and human resource management at the Instituto Jaime Balmes. He was pastor at Villa Manta and in 1966 professor at the seminary of Madrid as well as pastor of Santiago and San Juan Bautista. In 1976, he graduated in Business Administration in Barcelona and 1977 in Group Dynamics in the Center for Psychology in Madrid. García- Gasco Vicente was founded in 1977 to Episcopal Vicar of the III. Vicariate appointed by Madrid. In 1979 he became a professor at the Instituto Teologico " San Damaso " Institución Arzobispo Claret.

On March 20, 1985, Pope John Paul II appointed Titular Bishop of Nona and appointed him as Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid. He received his episcopal consecration on 11 May of the same year the Archbishop of Madrid, Ángel Suquía. Co-consecrators were the apostolic nuncio in Spain and later Cardinal Antonio Innocenti, and the Madrid Archbishop emeritus Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancon. In 1990 he was President of the International Theological Institute for Distance Learning (Instituto Internacional de Teología a Distancia ); parallel he taught at the National Distance University ( UNED). In 1988 he was elected General Secretary of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, and held this post until 1993. Pope John Paul II appointed García- Gasco Vicente on 24 July 1992 as archbishop of Valencia.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marcello in the College of Cardinals. The argument put forward on grounds of age resignation García- Gasco Vicente by the Office of the Archbishop of Valencia took Benedict XVI. January 8, 2009, and appointed him to the enthronement and inauguration ceremony of his successor, Carlos Osoro Sierra, 18 April 2009 Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese.

Cardinal Agustín García- Gasco Vicente was a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments ( 2008-2011 ) and the Pontifical Council for the Family ( 2008 to 2011 ).

He died in Rome, where he had traveled for the beatification of Pope John Paul II. Against a heart attack
