Agustín Lazo Adalid

Agustín Lazo Adalid (* 1896 in Mexico City; † ibid, 1971) was a Mexican artist, scene painter, costume designer and playwright. He is seen by many art researchers as a pioneer of surrealism in Mexican painting.

Biography

Lazo came paternal and maternal of prominent Mexican families, graduated from the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria and began his training at the picturesque founded by Alfredo Ramos Martínez 1913 Escuela al Aire Libre de Pintura of Santa Anita Zacatlamanco, Iztapalapa and attended from 1917 together with Rufino Tamayo, Julio Castellanos and Gabriel Fernández Ledesma Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. During this time he assisted Saturnino Herrán and went for the first time in 1922 to Europe, where he visited museums in France, Italy, Germany and Belgium and got contact with the avant garde movement. In the meantime, he stayed in Mexico, had his first solo exhibition there in 1926 and then lived again from 1928 to 1930 in Paris. The European painting influenced him among the Mexican painters according to many art researchers win the years 1930-1945 probably the most. His style has at times been compared to that of Celestino Gorostiza. Lazo belonged to the so-called " Grupo Grupo sin " of Los Contemporáneos. 1982 an exhibition for him in the Museo Nacional de Arte took place posthumously. Lazo was beloved by Xavier Villaurrutia. He worked as a scene painter and costume designer at Teatro Ulises and the Orientación in Mexico City and at the Teatro Hidalgo. In Mexico City, he also taught painting at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado " La Esmeralda" and at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes.
