Ahmed Adnan Saygun

Ahmed Adnan Saygun ( born September 7, 1907 in İzmir, † January 6, 1991 in İstanbul ) was a Turkish composer, musician and musicologist.

Saygun worked as a school teacher. 1928 to 1931 he studied at the Schola Cantorum in Paris with Vincent d' Indy composition and Eugène Borrel counterpoint and harmony. Since 1936, he taught composition at the Conservatory of Ankara. In 1955 he was among the founders of the Institute of Folklore Research. Since 1964 he has taught composition and ethnomusicology at the İstanbul State Conservatory. In 1971 he was appointed state artist. He is counted among the Turkish Five, the group of the first professional composer Turkey to the Cemal Resid Rey still count, Ulvi Cemal Erkin, Ferid Alnar and Necil Kâzım Akses except him.
