Aidin Vilayet

The Vilayet of Aydın ( Ottoman vilayet -i ولايت ايدين Aydın ) was the name of a province of the Ottoman Empire. Aydın is now the name for the same Turkish province of Aydın. The province's name comes from the Principality of Aydınoğulları who ruled the region from the Ottomans.

The 1864 created Vilayet of Aydın included the Sanjak İzmir, Aydın and Muğla. 1877, the number of Sanjak, according to an administration agreement with the new Sanjak Manisa to four. 1892, the number of Sanjak rose with Denizli to five. The Sanjak of Izmir was the center of the vilayets. In the 1900s, the vilayet comprised a large part of today's Aegean Region.

Population

The population of the Ottoman Empire was divided into the registers to their Millet or religion. So then categories were as Muslims, Jews, and Greek Orthodox Christians. Overall, the residents of Aydin were Muslims in 1914 1,249,067.

The number of Greeks was 299 097. Approximately 35 041 inhabitants were Jews and only 20,287 residents were Armenians.
