Aiguillon (Lot-et-Garonne)

Aiguillon is a municipality with 4283 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in France, in the department of Lot- et- Garonne in the Aquitaine region.

Geography

The former Bastide Aiguillon on the left bank of the Lot, not far from its confluence with the Garonne. Since the opening section with ships is closed, branches at Aiguillon a small channel from (Le Canalet ), who headed the boats according to Nicole, where a lock allows the descent into the Garonne.

History

Aiguillon was formerly only the title of a barony. King Henri IV brought in his letters from Blois in August 1599, the baronies Aguillon, Montpezat, Sainte -Livrade and Dolmayrac the Duchy with peerage for Henri de Lorraine, eldest son of Charles II de Lorraine, duc de Mayenne. The new duchy of Aiguillon is extinguished by the death of his childless prince in 1621. However, it was rebuilt, in 1634 in favor of Antoine de L'Age and 1638 for Marie Madeleine de Vignerot. This family led the duchy to the French Revolution on. An interesting duke of that lineage was Emmanuel -Armand du Plessis de Richelieu de Vignerot, who played a questionable role at the French court in the 18th century.
