The Aisne [ ɛn ] is a river in France, in the north of the country, passing through the regions of Lorraine, Champagne- Ardenne and Picardy.

Geography

It rises in the Argonne massif, in the municipality of Rembercourt - Sommaisne drained and generally in a westerly direction. The Aisne flows after 353 kilometers at Compiègne in the Oise. On their way they passed through the department:

From the mouth to Condé- sur -Aisne, the river is navigable by ships. He will continue above Lateral Canal à l' Aisne to Vieux- lès- Asfeld and then accompanied by the Canal des Ardennes to Vouziers.

History

In antiquity, the river was still called Axona. During the Gallic war here defeated Julius Caesar in the Battle of Axona a Celtic army of Belger.

During the First World War, the region was on the Aisne hotly debated, particularly in September 1914, the spring of 1917 and in May / June 1918.
