The Aiviq ( Inupiaq: walrus ) is a traveling under the flag of the United States, anchor handling tug (AHT, Anchor Handling Tug engl. ) And icebreakers. The primary task of Aiviq is the anchor laying of oil rigs. Furthermore, the special vessel can also be used for the oil spill at sea.

History

The ship was ordered in July 2009. It was built under the hull number 247 of North American Shipbuilding Inc.. The keel-laying ceremony took place on November 1, 2011 3 February 2010, the launching. The name of the vessel was determined in a competition, won by a twelve year old student from northern Alaska.

Incident

While the Aiviq dragged the rig " Kulluk " for overhaul in a shipyard to Seattle, occurred on December 28, 2012 in front of the Trinity Islands, an archipelago southwest of Kodiak Island in Alaska, a failure of the main power plant. Technology and equipment

The Aiviq is certified according to ice class A3 and break able to ice with a thickness of about one meter. At the front of the ship there is a helicopter platform.

Machinery and drive

It is powered Aiviq of four 12-cylinder diesel engines of type Caterpillar C -280, which develop a power of 4,060 kW at a rated speed of 1000 rpm.
