Ajmer (Hindi: अजमेर, Ajmer ) is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Administrative seat of the district of the same name. The population is about 540,000 ( 2011 census ).

Geography

Ajmer is located in Zentralrajasthan, about 130 kilometers southwest of the capital Jaipur. It is located on a ridge of Aravalligebirges and the Ana Sagar Lake and marked to the west as the border of the Thar Desert.

History

Ajmer was founded in the late 10th century by Raja Ajay Chauhan. His strategic location because it was conquered by Muhammad of Ghori in 1193, later founder of the Sultanate of Delhi. In 1559 it was handed over to the Mughal emperor Akbar and was long an important seat of the Mughal emperors.

In 1818 Ajmer became one of the few places in Rajputana under the direct British control; most others remained at least nominally independent princely states. On November 1, 1956, the province of Ajmer- Merwara came to Rajasthan.

Attractions

  • Akbar's Palace, was built in 1570 by Mughal emperor Akbar Indian for his stay in the city and for his son Jahangir. It is one of the most fortified palaces of Rajasthan to the southeast and since 1908 serves as a museum.
  • Nasiyan Mandir ( Red Temple )
  • Ana Sagar, an artificial lake, at the south bank of the Khobra Behroon temple is located.
