Ã…ke Wallenquist

Åke Anders Edvard Wallenquist ( born January 16, 1904 in Västervik, † April 8, 1994 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish astronomer.

He worked 1928-1935 on Bosscha Observatory Dutch in Indonesia. In 1948 he obtained a position as assistant professor at the observatory Kvistaberg Uppsala University. He began with the study of double stars, but soon were open star clusters and their properties to his main area of ​​research. Wallenquist was a zealous member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, and the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala. From the 1950s he was the lead author of popular science astronomy in Sweden. His books have aroused the interest of Astronomy in generations of young people.

Awards

In 1979 he received the Award of Karin Gierow Svenska academies. In the same year, the asteroid ( 2114 ) Wallenquist was named after him.
