Akito Arima (Japanese有 马 朗 人, Arima Akito, * September 13, 1930 in Osaka Prefecture, Japan) is a Japanese theoretical nuclear physicist.

Life

Arima studied at the University of Tokyo (Bachelor in 1953, Master 1956), where he received his doctorate in 1958. After that, he was at the Institute for Nuclear Physics, in 1960 and 1964 lecturer assistant professor. 1967/68 he was a visiting professor at Rutgers University and from 1971 professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook ( SUNY ). From 1975 he was professor at the University of Tokyo. In 1981 he became director of the computer center. 1983 to 1987 he was Chancellor of the University, 1987-1989 Vice President and 1989-1993 President of the University. In 1993 he retired and was a professor at Hosei University ( 1993), 1993-1998 Science Adviser in the Ministry of Culture and 1993-1998 President of RIKEN (Institute of Physical and Chemical Research ).

In 1998 he was elected for the Liberal Democratic Party of the proportional representation into Sangiin, the Upper House of the Japanese Parliament, where he served for a term until 2004. In Obuchi cabinet, he was Minister of Education until 1999, after a cabinet reshuffle 1999, Head of the Department of Science and Technology. From 2000 he was chairman of the Japan Science Foundation ( Nihon Kagaku Gijutsu Shinko English for Zaidan ).

Arima is with Francesco Iachello the founder of the Interacting Boson Model ( 1974).

In 1993 he was awarded the Tom W. Bonner Prize for nuclear physics with Iachello. In 1987 he received the Humboldt Research Award, 1990, the Wetherill Medal, the price of the Japanese Academy (1993) and the 1978 Nishina price. He is a multiple honorary doctorates (including Drexel University, SUNY, Birmingham, Glasgow, Weizmann Institute of Science, University of Arizona ) and Honorary Professor of the University of Glasgow ( 1984). In 1990 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and in 2004 the Big Band of the Order of the Rising Sun. He was Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE ), 1998 Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and 1991 Kanselarij the Nederlandse Orden 2002.

In 1988 he received the Prize of the Haiku Society of a book of poetry ( haiku poems ).
