Al Levitt

Alan " Al " Levitt ( born November 11, 1932 in New York City; † 28 November 1994 ) was an American jazz drummer who worked mainly in France.

Levitt studied with Lennie Tristano and started from 1952, for example, to work with Charles Mingus and Stan Getz professionally as a jazz musician. In 1956 he moved to the Netherlands and a year later to Paris. In 1958 he returned to the U.S., where he played with Jackie McLean and went with the band Lionel Hampton on Europe and Asia tour. In the early 1970s he played with Lee Konitz and Zoot Sims. In 1975 he moved back to Paris, where he played with leading French jazz musicians and expatriates like Barney Wilen, Stéphane Grappelli and Martial Solal and by traveling musicians such as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh accompanied. In the 1980s he played with the " petits loups de Jazz" and in the quintet by Guy Lafitte. He died of a brain hemorrhage.
