Alain (bishop of Auxerre)

Alan ( † 14 October 1185 ) of Auxerre, and Alan of Auxerre or Alain called Auxerre, was a Cistercian abbot Bernard of Clairvaux and biographer.

Alan was born in Flanders, probably in Lille. The date of his birth is unknown. He stepped under Bernard of Clairvaux into the Cistercian Order in 1140 and was abbot of the monastery Larrivour. 1152 he was elected bishop of Auxerre, however, laid down in the year 1167 this office and went as a simple monk returned to Clairvaux, where he last lived previous cell in Bernhard and wrote a biography of the saint. Alan died on October 14, 1185 in Clairvaux.

It should not be confused Alan Auxerre with the scholastics Alan of Lille, who was also a Cistercian monk and was from the same home, but was a lot younger.
