Alberto Barton

Alberto Leonardo Barton, ( born 12 August 1870 in Lima, † October 25, 1950 ibid ) Spanish-language Alberto Barton Thompson, was a Peruvian physician and microbiologist.

Life and work

Barton grew up as the son of English parents in Lima and studied post-school medicine at the University of Lima. After graduation, he received a scholarship to study in London and Edinburgh. He then became chief physician at a hospital in Lima.

Barton described in 1905 for the first time the bacteria later identified as Bartonella after him as the causative agent of Oroya fever, a bartonellosis, which occurred in workers on the railway route Lima -La Oroya.
