Albor Tholus

Albor Tholus is an extinct shield volcano in the Elysium Planitia region on the planet Mars. Located just south of the neighboring volcanoes Elysium Mons and Hecate Tholus.

Albor Tholus is 4.5 km high and has at the base a diameter of 160 km. Its caldera has a diameter of 30 km and 3 km deep. Compared to terrestrial volcanoes caldera is unusually deep.

Evaluations of Mars probe Mars Express has shown that the volcanoes of Elysium region over long periods of time were active. Larger eruptions of Albor Tholus took place before 2.2 and 1.6 billion and 500 million years ago.
