Albrecht Wilhelm Roth

Albrecht Wilhelm Roth ( born January 6, 1757 Dötlingen, † October 16, 1834 in Vegesack ) was a German physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Roth".

Biography

Roth was the oldest son of eleven children of the pastor Gottfried Roth. After his schooling at the Gymnasium Oldenburg, he studied medicine at the University of Halle. After his doctorate in medicine in Erlangen Roth sat down with 21 years as a doctor in his hometown Dotlingen, but moved in 1779 to Vegesack, where he in the then about 1000 inhabitants spots and its surroundings as the only doctor a very wide field of activity found. In 1781 he was appointed Landphysikus and published some medical releases.

As soon as he settled in Vegesack, he also began with a lively scientific publications. Among other things, he published in 1788 Tentamen florae Germanicae, a classification of all German plants. Right Bremer physician and naturalist Wilhelm Olbers Focke was in an article about Roth wrote: " During the first decade of the 19th century, Roth was one of the most respected German plant aficionados [ ... ] ". 1802 his research trip to the North and the Baltic Sea instead for exploring marine algae.

Bremen gave Roth 1787 on the steep bank on the river Weser in Vegesack, Weserstraße 74, 75, 75c, a plot of land on which he built his house and a large garden docked. With much effort and perseverance Roth has turned it into a garden, which now serves as a public city garden Vegesack. The high reputation of Roth's own as well as the knowledge of whose writings led Goethe, Roth 1803 propose for the Botanical Chair at the University of Jena and 1810 at the University of Erlangen; he beat both offers from though. In 1808 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Honors

  • The plant genus Rothia of the subfamily of Fabaceae ( Faboideae ) is named after him.
  • In Vegesack the Albrecht -Roth street was named after him.
