Alcaligenaceae

Bordetella bronchiseptica

The Alcaligenaceae are a bacteria family, which belongs to the order Burkholderiales. Like all Proteobacteria, they are gram - negative.

Features

Almost all representatives of Alcaligenaceae are aerobic and chemoorganotroph. Accordingly, the oxidative pathway (breathing). However, some species (eg strains of Alcaligenes faecalis ) also able to live under oxygen exclusion ( anaerobic). Under these conditions, they use nitrate instead of oxygen as an electron acceptor ( nitrate respiration, denitrification ). Many species use organic acids and various amino acids as carbon sources. Often they are movable by peritrichous flagella arranged, but also stationary species are present (eg, Bordetella parapertussis and Taylor equigenitalis ).

Pathogenicity

Some pathogenic species ( pathogens) are found in this family. So Taylor equigenitalis is the causative agent of contagious equine inflammation of the horse. Bordetella pertussis is dangerous to humans and can cause whooping cough.
