Alcántara Dam

The Alcántara Reservoir is a reservoir of the Tagus, the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula. It is located in the Spanish autonomous community of Extremadura near the Portuguese border, near the village of Alcántara. The dam is officially called Embalse de José María de Oriol - Alcántara II and is named after a director of the former owner company Hidroeléctrica Española (now Iberdrola ) named.

The shut-off was about 600 m built in 1970 above the ancient Roman bridge of Alcántara. The gravity dam is 130 meters high and 570 meters long.

The reservoir holds 3.162 billion cubic meters and 104 square kilometers. The hydroelectric power plant provides 915 megawatts.
