Alceste is the name of an opera in three acts. It was composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, with a libretto by Ranieri de ' Calzabigi. In 1767 this opera was premiered in Vienna. Gluck also wrote a version in French, which had ten years later in Paris world premiere. The " Paris version " differs not only lyrically of the " Vienna premiere ," but is also a musical reworking of the work.

Action

It is about the legend of Alcestis. King Admetus is dying, but the gods promise to spare his life, when instead someone else sacrifices to his. Queen Alceste agrees. She died despite the supplications of Admetus, preferring to take it. Hercules praised but to save both. It rises in the underworld and freed Alceste; at the same time he protects Admetus, so in the end both can live happily.
