Aldo Tonti

Aldo Tonti ( born March 2, 1910 in Rome; † 7 July 1988 Marino ) was an Italian cinematographer.

Biography

After attending a trade school Tonti worked as a press photographer. 1934 began his work in the film industry, first as a camera assistant and still photographer. 1938 Tonti began then as director of photography, mostly in little-noticed filmed entertainment, but also in the propaganda film Benghazi. After his involvement with Luchino Visconti Ossessione he became a sought-after cinematographer of neo-realism and counted in the 1950's most sought-after cinematographers in Italy and worked with directors such as Federico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini or King Vidor. More and more he worked on trivial films that were produced for mass entertainment. Late in his career Tonti worked then propagated with in English-language films.
