Alessandro Specchi

Alessandro Specchi (* 1668 in Rome, † November 16, 1729 in Rome) was a Roman architect and graphic designer.

Specchi was a pupil of Carlo Fontana. The main building, which was built Specchi in the years 1703 to 1705 in Rome, was the city harbor on the Ripetta. From this main work nothing has been preserved as it was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century following the attachment of the Tiber. In its place now stands the Museum of the Ara Pacis. From Piranesi's engravings and Giuseppe Vasis and Dokuemtation which he himself left behind, but we know how this harbor looked like back then.

Essentially, the port facility had the shape of a staircase with the church of San Girolamo as the main reference point. Then also stone blocks were used for the construction of the port, which had fallen from the Colosseum by an earthquake in 1703. Also in the competition for the construction of the Spanish Steps Specchi had submitted a draft, but who could not prevail over those of his rivals Francesco De Sanctis.

His career ended in 1725 with the collapse of the portico of San Paolo fuori le mura and the subsequent exclusion from the Accademia di San Luca.
