Carlo Fontana

Carlo Fontana ( born April 22, 1638 Brusata in Ticino, † February 5, 1714 in Rome ) was a Swiss-Italian architect, sculptor and engineer.

Life

Fontana was come to Rome was in 1653, and was first a pupil of Giovanni Maria Bolino and then of Pietro da Cortona and Carlo Rainaldi. Between 1655 and 1667, he served as staff in the workshop of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, where he soon became an indispensible partner because of his technical understanding and its design strength.

Fontana developed in the sequel to a successful architect, although less captivated by great innovation or outstanding individual performances, as by the skilful eclectic merging of style elements of the three "big" builders of the 17th century, Bernini, Borromini and Pietro da Cortona. He knew how to make his buildings to a broad public by publishing comprehensive support materials and illustrations for his construction projects. These publications also include Tempio Vaticano ( 1694 ), in the Fontana building of St. Peter's and the ( designed by Bernini ) describes Peter's Square, was involved in its work Fontana.

In addition, he also had a didactic skill. From his workshop, some of the most important architects of Italy and all Europe of the 18th century including Alessandro Specchi Nicola Michetti, Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, James Gibbs, Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, Matthew Daniel Poeppelmann and Filippo Juvarra formed out. His son Francesco met with him and was a talented architect, but died early.

  • Plans for an unrealized construction of a large domed church, dedicated to the Holy Martyrs, inside the Coliseum.

His other works include the Jesuit monastery of Loyola in Spain, and the expansion of the Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella in Lake Maggiore.
