Aletta Jacobs

Aletta Henrietta Jacobs ( born February 9, 1854 in Hoogezand- Sappemeer; † August 10, 1929 in Baarn ) was a Dutch physician and suffragist. She was the first woman in the Netherlands, received a license to practice as a doctor. 1882, she founded the first birth control clinic in the world.

Life

Aletta Jacobs sat down early one for higher education for women. 1870 she was allowed as the first woman to attend a high school and a year later she demanded of the liberal ministers Thorbecke admission to study medicine at the University of Groningen, which was granted to her in 1871 with a probationary period of one year. Even on his deathbed was Thorbecke Jacobs permission to also lay their exams. After successfully passing their exams in 1877 and 1878, she became the first female doctor in the Netherlands and worked according to their promotion in 1879 as a general practitioner in Amsterdam. While Aletta Jacobs was not the first Dutch woman who was admitted to a university degree; this was Anna Maria Schürmann in the 17th century. This had the lectures, however, still follow behind curtains and did not complete their studies.

In her practice in Amsterdam Aletta Jacobs stopped next to their normal office hours and courses in the use of pessaries for contraception and helped women of the lower classes free of charge.

Besides her work as a doctor, she fought for women's suffrage in 1894 and helped to found the statewide "Uniting for women's suffrage " ( Vereeniging voor Vrouwenkiesrecht ), whose chairman, she was from 1903.

During the First World War, she organized a peace conference in The Hague, which was attended by more than 1,000 women from twelve countries. International recognition she also won her involvement in the " World Federation for Women's Suffrage ."

Yet in her lifetime she was able to follow in 1917, as the passive and the active right to vote was introduced in 1922 for women in the Netherlands.

Aletta Jacobs was married to the politician Carel Victor Gerritsen ( 1850-1905 ).
