Baarn

( Listen? / I ) Baarn is a municipality in the Netherlands, Utrecht. The municipality also includes Eembrugge, location Vuursche and part of Soestdijk.

Location and economic

Baarn is located 30 km southeast of Amsterdam to the car and railways to Amersfoort. It lies between the forest area Het Gooi / Utrecht Ridge and the polders of the river Eem (also see Amersfoort ). How to live in the neighboring Soest there many commuters from the capital, Hilversum and Utrecht. Baarn has some publishers. Economically, the tourism and agriculture are significant.

History

Baarn emerged in the 12th century as a settlement along a trade route to Amsterdam. It was given in 1350 by the Utrecht bishop city rights, but never grew into a city proper, especially since the right to a fortification was not vested. In the "Golden Age", 1600-1670, were how to build a country house or a summer residence in the former farming village in 's- Graveland, many wealthy Amsterdammers. After 1870 it became a residential village for wealthy commuters and retirees from Amsterdam. After 1950, even less well-heeled could afford an apartment in Baarn, as the new district also contained social housing.

The Royal House

At the bottom area Baarns in Soestdijk, on the border of the municipality of Soest, stands the Palais Soestdijk. In 1638 the grounds of today's palace was bought at so-called Zoestdijk of Cornelis de Graeff. He settled there to invest his country house with an adjoining park. Subsequently Soestdijk came to the House of Orange. The Dutch Queen Juliana used it in the years 1937 to 2004 together with her husband Bernhard of Lippe - Biesterfeld as a residence. Queen Juliana died there also on 20 March 2004.

The castle was built in 1674 on the orders of the " governor - king" William III. built in 1816 and expanded with the two side wings and whitewashed. Since 1971 it is owned by the government. Pending resolution of its final determination, it is available since early 2007 for 3 years to the public. Tickets must be ordered in advance.

In situation Vuursche is the castle Drakensteyn where the then Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands has lived with her family from about 1967 to 1981. After the abdication Juliana and Beatrix's inauguration in 1980, the family eventually moved to The Hague. Drakensteyn is still privately owned, and Princess Beatrix uses it after her abdication on 30 April 2013 as their private residence.

Here a farmstead named Drakensteyn was first mentioned in 1359. The present building was built in 1640-1643 but for Gerard van Reede. It has an octagonal floor plan on, is surrounded by a moat and is only accessible by a bridge. It changed hands several times, as well as its appearance and appears today in the classical style.

Attractions

The above-mentioned royal domains are open to the public since 2007 limited. The Groeneveld Castle, west of Baarn, is a center for information about nature and landscape ( temporary exhibitions, visit noon ) in the middle of a forest.

The forests are ideal for hiking, horseback riding or biking.
