Lopik

Lopik ( listen? / I ) is a municipality in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The municipality has 13,992 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013).

Places

The municipality consists of the following villages:

  • Lopik ( seat of the municipal administration, several schools and other institutions)
  • Cabauw
  • Willing Langerak (population of these three places total of about 7,900 )
  • Lopikerkapel ( about 1,000 inhabitants)
  • Polsbroek (about 1,200 inhabitants; beautiful, built in the 14th century, renovated in 1830 Village Church )
  • Benschop (including the hamlet Polsbroekerdam about 3,500 inhabitants )
  • Jaarsveld ( about 300 inhabitants)
  • Uitweg (less than 50 inhabitants).

Location and economic

Lopik lies in the polders of reclaimed in the 11th century " Lopikerwaard " north of the Lek, in the extreme southwest of the province. Neighboring municipalities are Schoonhoven, IJsselstein, Montfoort and Oudewater. Iron and highways do not exist here. The main towns, Lopik and Benschop, former farming villages are easily reached from Utrecht and other cities by bus.

The community is already centuries mainly for agricultural and livestock economy of meaning.

Location for transmitters

Lopik is the site of several transmitters. Near the church, but on the basis of the community IJsselstein, located since 1938, the medium-wave transmitter Lopik, a transmission tower for the radiation of medium wave frequency 675 kHz (another also in 1938 erected transmission tower for medium wave frequencies 1332 kHz on 21 August 2004 blast demolished). Furthermore, there is the highest tower in western Europe, the Gerbrandytoren.

Others

The community is trying to promote the " sustainable tourism " through the creation of cycle paths in the picturesque polder land.

In 2007, a wind farm was opened at Lopik. This system includes three 80 -meter high wind turbines that generate a total average of about 750,000 kWh of electricity per month.
