Renswoude

( Listen? / I ) renswoude is the smallest municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht. She has no districts.

History

The community Renswoude located in the eastern part of the province of Utrecht. Already 855 Renswoude than silva Hrenhem ( " Rhenenser forest ") was mentioned in a document, the settlement itself is created but only around 1400. At that time Renswoude from a fortified house, called Borgwal, and a few scattered farmsteads. Built in 1654 Johan van Reede, the brother of Godart van Reede, a castle near the former Borgwal, thus paving the emergence of the village, the first only from the elongated Dorpsstraat ( " village street " ) with both sides loosely arranged houses existed. 1639 was van Reede in the village built a domed church.

1674 was Renswoude a so-called " Hooge en vrije Heerlijkheid ", an area with its own independent jurisdiction. This resulted in 1795 the municipality Renswoude. 1849 targeted the governor of the province of Utrecht to a merger, but did not materialize. 1969 plans were Renswoude with Woudenberg and Scherpenzeel merge, which also failed. Even then, there were always unsuccessful plans Renswoude to withdraw the status of an independent municipality until today.

Location

Renswoude located in the Gelderland Vallei, a valley in Gelderland, extending from the Veluwe to the Utrecht Ridge, and that was a nearly uninhabitable wasteland with swampy bogs and sand drifts up to the year 1000. Even later in the very humid area only on mounds was possible a settlement. In the 15th and 16th century, the area was used to Renswoude mainly for peat extraction. With the gain of Grebbedeiches and construction of the Slaperdeiches in the 17th century, the country was a large area under cultivation.
