Bunnik

( Listen? / I ) Bunnik is a municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht.

History

The Romans built shortly after the beginning of our era at Vechten ( Fectio ) is an important fort ( castellum ) with a port at the former course of the Rhine. At that time the river Lek was less important. Most of the water flowing from Wijk at Duurstede in the north via Utrecht to Katwijk on the Rhine.

In the fort, a trading center developed. Even when the Romans in the third century left the castle, the marketplace remained. The area was occupied in the course of time by the Frisians and the Franks. See also the main article Fectio.

Around 1125 the Rhine was separated by a dike at Wijk bij Duurstede. The Lek now took on the Rhine water and introduced it to the North Sea.

In the 8th and 9th centuries, the three villages Bunnichem ( Bunnik ), Iodichem ( Odijk ) and Wercundia developed ( Werkhoven ). Their small village churches were built in the 12th and 13th centuries.

From 1817 to 1856 there were four municipalities on the territory of the present municipality of Bunnik. The church today has existed since 1964.

Environment

The municipality Bunnik is located close to a railway junction. There are fast connections to Utrecht. The Crooked Rhine ( Rijn Kromme ) flows through the three settlement areas of the community. The oldest hostel in the Netherlands is located in Rhijnauwen.
