Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov

Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov (Russian: Александр Андреевич Иванов; * July 16, 1806 in Saint Petersburg, † July 3, 1858 ) was a Russian painter who made ​​his name primarily as a history painter, a painter of biblical subjects as well as a landscape painter.

Life

Raised in a family of artists, he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 11 years. Here he was, among other things his father Andrei Ivanovich Ivanov student, a professor of painting, who had the talent of his son recognized and encouraged early. For his drawings he received already during training two silver medals and was awarded in 1824 for the image Priam begs Achilles for the body of Hector ( Приам испрашивает у Ахиллеса труп Гектора ) a gold medal. Three years later he was in prison for Joseph interpreting dreams ( Иосиф в темнице истолковывает сны царедворцам фараона ) again awarded a gold medal.

After completing his training was allowed to it under a scholarship to go abroad. Ivanov went through Dresden to Rome. Here he was to reside for most of his life. During this time he became friends with the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. Here he came under the influence of the Nazarenes. In the period 1837-1857 he worked on the painting Apparition of Christ to the People ( Явление Христа народу ), which should be his main work. This painting was accompanied by about 300 sketches and detailed drawings; it is attributable to the style of classicism.

In 1857, Ivanov returned to Russia. He died in 1858 of cholera.

Alexander Ivanov's works are mostly visible in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum.
