Alexander de Savornin Lohman

Alexander Frederik de Savornin Lohman (* May 29, 1837 in Groningen, † June 11, 1924 in 's- Gravenhage ) was a Dutch judge, professor, journalist and politician of the anti - revolutionists Partij (ARP), the Vrij - Antirevolutionaire Partij ( VAR), the Christelijk - Historic Partij (CHP ) and the Historic Christelijk - Unie ( CHU ), who was forty member of the First or the Second Chamber of the States General, at times Interior Minister, a longtime party leader and Minister of State with interruptions.

Life

Family, study and judge

Alexander Frederik de Savornin Lohman came from the well-known family Savornin Lohman. His grandfather Maurits Adriaan de Savornin Lohman was a member of the Assembly of Notables, as well as several years mayor of Groningen. His older brother Sebastiaan Mattheus Sigismund de Savornin Lohman was for many years a member and later President of the Legal drying yard (Algemene Rekenkamer ), while his older brother Maurits Adriaan de Savornin Lohman was a lawyer in administrative services and 1889-1891 Governor of Suriname. After attending the gymnasium of Groningen de Savornin Lohman began 1855 Studied Roman law and Dutch law at the University of Groningen, leaving in March 1861 with the degree of Dr. jur. completed.

His professional career began in January 1863 as a judge at the district court in Appingedam and then from September 1866 to November 1872 in 's- Hertogenbosch, before between November 1872 and March 1884 Judge at the Court of' was as a judge of the District Court s-Hertogenbosch. On February 24, 1890 de Savornin Lohman was appointed by Prime Minister Æneas Mackay, Jr. Secretary of the Interior in the cabinet and this belonged to the end of the term of office of Mackay on August 20, 1891.

In 1881 he was named after his resignation from the Cabinet to the Commander of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

In September 1891 he returned as a professor of constitutional law at the Free University of Amsterdam and taught there until October 1896. Moreover, he was elected on 15 June 1892 Member of the First Chamber of the States General, and represented there until February 1, 1894, the Province of Gelderland.

Subsequently, he was a second time from February 13 to March 20, 1894, and again from 16 May 1894 to the February 8, 1921 Member of the Second Chamber of the States General, and represented the constituency Goes there again.

Editor in Chief, group and party chairman

He was also, between May 1894 and October 1921 chief editor of the daily newspaper De Nederlander.

During his long parliamentary membership, he was between 1896 and February 1921 only Chairman of the Group ( camera club) the Vrij - Antirevolutionaire Partij (VAR ), then from April 1903 to July 1908 the Christelijk - Historic Partij ( CHP), and most recently in July 1908, the Christelijk - Historical Unie ( CHU ). In this role he was also, between July 1908 and February 1921 political leader of the CHU.

He was also the first 1898-1903 Chairman of the VAR and then 1903-1908 Member of the Main Board of the CHP. De Savorin Lohman was then 1908-1913 Chairman of the CHU before until his death he was honorary chairman of the CHU in the port of 1913.

For his long-standing political merits him the honorary title of Minister of State was awarded (Minister van State ) on 31 August 1909 lifetime.
