Alexander Nikolayevich Samokhvalov

Alexander Nikolayevich Samochwalow (Russian Александр Николаевич Самохвалов; born August 21, 1894 in Beschezk, Tver, Russian Empire; † August 20, 1971 in Leningrad) was a Soviet painter, graphic artist, illustrator, sculptor, and set designer. As the founder and respected member of the Leningrad school of painting and the Leningrad Artists' Union he was a representative of Socialist Realism. He painted portraits, historical paintings and genre paintings, monumental, but also small -scale works.

Artistic Career

From 1914 to 1918 he studied at the church painter Vasily Belyayev and the sculptor Hugo Salemann at the Imperial Academy of Arts ( after 1917 Ilya Repin - Institute) in Petrograd. From 1920 to 1923 he attended the public workshops Vkhutemas and accompanied Kuzma Sergeevich Petrov- Vodkin 1921 on a cultural-historical expedition to Samarkand. Since the late 1920s, he created images that show the young heroes of socialist labor and athletes. From 1935 he painted images of leaders of the CPSU and created sculptures for the Leningrad Lomonosov Porcelain Factory. He designed sets and costumes for Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky's drama The poor bride in Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, and for the play Hot heart, which in 1943 was listed in the Leningrad Pushkin Theatre. From 1948 to 1954 he taught at the Leningrad School of Art and Industry. In 1971, he died in Leningrad and was buried in the cemetery Komarov. 1977 published his memoirs.

Exhibitions and Awards

Since 1914 Samochwalow regularly participated in exhibitions. In 1925 he won at the Paris Art Fair Gold Medal, 1937, he was represented at the Paris World Fair and won the Grand Prix. He had Major solo exhibitions in 1963 in Leningrad, in 1994 in Saint Petersburg and Tver. In 1967 he received the award earned personality of the Arts of the RSFSR. Of his works are part of the collections of numerous museums. The Russian Museum in St. Petersburg has works by Samochwalow, as is the Tretyakov Gallery, and numerous private collections around the world.
