Alexander Peacock

Alexander James Peacock ( born June 11, 1861 in Creswick, Victoria, Australia; † October 7th, 1933 Creswick ) was several times minister and three times Prime Minister of the Australian state of Victoria.

Life

The that were found from a Scottish family Peacock married on 1 January 1901 at the founding of Australia, Millie Gertrude Holden ( 1870-1948 ), the daughter of an auctioneer. The couple had no children.

Peacock was in his early years teachers in Creswick, then lived for several years as a clerk in Melbourne, before he became an employee of a large mining manager in Creswick. Then he bought himself some gold mines and had shops in Creswick, Prahran, Melbourne and Ballarat.

From 1889 Peacock was a deputy in the Parliament of the State of Victoria, from 1890 several times Minister (Minister of Labour and Public Instruction) and in the years 1901-1902, 1914-1917 and 1924 and three times Prime Minister of the State of Victoria. Most recently, he was Speaker of the House of Representatives 1928-1933.

The public gave Peacock nicknamed " Laughing Premier " because of his loud, infectious laughter.

Peacock was the brother in the Masonic Lodge Holden Research Circle No.. 2, Parkdale in Creswick.

His wife Millie Peacock in 1933 after the death of her husband and ten years after the introduction of the passive female suffrage as the first woman member of the House of Representatives of the State of Victoria and immediately took over her husband's office as a spokeswoman for the House of Representatives until 1935.
